‘Steel Magnolias’ is Back! [TRAILER]

Posted by on Jul 3, 2012
Steel Magnolias, the 1989 sisterhood classic that originally starred a bevy of notable actresses such as Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, and a just-about-to-hit-it-big Julia Roberts, is being remade with an all-Black cast.
Succeeding the powerful cast, this new film will star Queen Latifah as M’Lynn (who also executive-produced the film); Phylicia Rashad as Clairee; Adepero Oduye (who won praise for her indie role in Pariah) as Annelle; Jill Scott as Truvy; Alfre Woodard as Ouiser; and Condola Rashad as Shelby. For the male roles, expect to see Michael Beasley, Tory Kittles, and the always luscious Lance Gross.
The trailer has finally dropped in anticipation of its fall release on Lifetime. The story of a group of female friends and relatives sticking together through the good times and bad still takes place in Louisiana, but this time in New Orleans, not Natchitoches.

Black reinterpretations of renowned stories in entertainment are steadily becoming popular and have proven to be quite successful for the most part; with the most recent re-telling of a familiar fable being Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, on New York’s Broadway with Blair Underwood and Nicole Ari Parker.
