I’ll go ahead and admit it; I was the girl begging my mom to let me stay up until the end of Video Soul on BET, so I could see if “Please Don’t Go” made the top of the countdown. Yes, I was completely and unashamedly in love with Immature lead singer Batman as a pre-pubescent teenage girl.
What’s funny is I can’t even stand to look at Marques Houston as a grown man, but when it was 1995 and that We Got it album came out—what! You couldn’t tear me away from the TV, even though it wasn’t like I couldn’t just look around my room to see his face. Every issue of Right On! magazine that came out and featured them, I owned, which was pretty much all of them from like ’92 to ’96. I spent my days ripping out pages of him and cutting out Romeo and LDB to make my own bootleg wall posters.
Luckily, for the sake of by preteen sanity, Batman decided to start rocking a press-n-curl bob by the group’s 1997 album, The Journey, and it didn’t take long for me to get over that crush at all. That’s probably why I have no tolerance for MH today. But when he was rocking that wavy look with the middle part…you couldn’t tell me he wasn’t the finest teenager on the planet.
I know I’m not alone in my preteen obsessions. Who was your childhood crush?
