Three Things You Should Know About the KONY Movement

Posted by on Mar 8, 2012

Now that the viral Kony 2012 video is bringing attention to the atrocities committed by LRA’s vitriolic leader–everything from maiming and dismembering women and children to turning young boys into war criminals–outcries about whether this is just another iteration of the White savior coming to save wretched depraved Africans are louder than ever. While there is no discounting that Kony is a monster and needs to be stopped and this video has bought international attention to an issue that most of us were painfully unaware of, there are still other sides of this story to be considered.

Here are three things you should know about:

1. While many people are asking about where donations are going, take a look at some of the financials from the Invisible Children organization. http://c2052482.r82.cf0.rackcdn.com/images/895/original/AR11_small_final2.pdf?1325722694

Only about 15% of the funds go to management, 30% directly to Uganda and the rest of the money collected goes back to awareness about the campaign and the Invisible Children cause, according to the website.

2. The United States has a vested interest in gaining a stronghold in Africa, as China has been able to have diplomatic ties with many African nations in an effort to secure fuel, and important oil supplies. The United States may very well be looking at lending ‘friendly’ military support in Uganda as a means to infiltrate the region for their own devices. 3. The Invisible Children foundation has over 100 Ugandans on staff with a half dozen in Senior Management positions.  http://www.invisiblechildren.com/our-team

This video may be appealing to first world guilt, but the main thing is that dialogue is taking place about the best means to go about bringing awareness to some of the heinous crimes that are occurring globally and how regular citizens can lend a hand in eradicating injustice.
