Dawn Richard Releases ‘Armor On’ EP, Closes Dirty Money Chapter

Posted by on Mar 28, 2012

Dawn Richard is finally ready to break out on her own, dropping her highly anticipated EP, Armor On. Continuing the success of her 2011 mixtape, A Tell Tale Heart, Dawn hosted a listening session for her newest project in a room full of industry heavy hitters.

In an industry where artists release new music and mixtapes every other day, it seems as if we haven’t heard from the 28-year-old songbird in ages. Going from hit reality show Making The Band to touring the world on Diddy’s Last Train To Paris, Dawn now focuses on her solo return to music and taking control of her business. Where has she been, you ask? “It hasn’t taken that long [to return]; I dropped a mixtape just a year ago. I think music is being thrown out without thought or concept. I like to plan and strategize each move, so the story makes sense.”

With 10 tracks, Dawn made it clear that like a mother to a child, she can’t pick a favorite. “The EP as a whole is one song to me, and I love it all in its entirety. I play it through non-stop, like one song. It’s magic like that.”

The singer and fashion lover, who continues to give a peak into her daily wardrobe on her blog, also touched on her image this time around. “I’m a huge fan of Haider Ackermann, Alaxander Wang, Chanel and this new designer, Aji, whose line I wore at my SXSW performance. It had a  modern Joan of Arc vibe, and I loved it.”

Dawn is an integral part of Diddy Dirty Money, and when asked about the status of the band, Dawn says she is “always a member, but that chapter is closed for now. Right now, it’s about the Heart Movement.”

If you’re still wondering about Que, her love interest on Making the Band, or any other man in Dawn’s life, she made it evident that her heart was with her movement, and like Michael Jackson, she’s “dating music very heavily right now, considering marriage!”

Expect GoldenHeart, the first installment of her album trilogy, this year.
