Think about it… Marilyn was a sexy symbol, Lena was not! Everything does not have to be chosen by race.

Oh you poor, poor young minds ... Please look up how movies theaters refused to play Lena Horne movies in white theaters, because they feared that her beauty would cause white men to lust after her. Sexy enough for ya? Good lord.

It's not so much a race thing as it is an educational thing. People are not learning about Lena Horne. Lena's story hasn't been exposed the same way Marilyn's has or Dorothy Dandridge's has. Marilyn had a lot of controversy surrounding her name, the world continues to idolize her. Lena's story is in books and in documentaries people are not watching, and its sad because Lenas story in an incredible one.

The fact of the matter is Lena's story isn't known, and if people are not showing any general interest, if she isnt being spoon fed to society, if she isnt "in" and her image is being reproduced for mass manufactured posters at Target and TJ MAxx, no one is going to know or care to know.

We have to have an interest in where we came from, in order to be inspired enough to share it with the world.

And @Chantel... you need to read about Lena Horne, because for you to say she was not a sex symbol, you must not know about Lena. She was the FIRST black sex symbol.

I wouldn't put Marilyn and Lena Horn in the same category. I would more so put Marilyn and Pam Grier in the same category. They both played gimmicky roles directed toward their race and both were considered extremely sexy and a symbol of the times. Compare those pics and and you will have a serious problem. Lena on the other hand was just a class act.

People really need to get their facts straight. Read up on Marilyn before making these ignorant comments. The best thing about scandal is that most of is alleged. Marilyn wanted nothing more than to "Love and be loved". So she had a few love interests... So has J-lo... Slutty? She was the original Pin-up queen and kept it very classy. Y'all act like she was posted up, with her legs in a high V like most adult (and no adult) entertainers today. She is the epitome of a triple-threat: singing, acting (good or bad, she still got the roles), and beauty. THAT is why so many people love and emulate her. Plus, in the song, Nicki relates the price of fame to how Marilyn must have felt before she died.

Here we go again...

What does race have to do with anything? Why can’t I just like a person and choose to “know more about them” without somebody tearing them down because their public persona as a sex symbol/siren, and involvement in scandals? The same if I followed Beyonce, Our President Barack Obama, Martin Luther King Jr, and or/ Malcolm X ( I could go on). They are all influential entertainers/innovators/significant to american history, but not all people feel that way...

As I tell many people whom tell me to idolize somebody else, That was her life, her sins, and her past- & it ultimately killed her. None of that is a reflection of me, i just so happen to really dig Marilyn, her story, her legacy, and her quotes that I as a woman can relate to. you don't have to agree.

I don’t idolize/worship anyone but God, because that’s who I wish to be like in life and life for.

It pains me to see that you can’t even pose a question without bringing up their human nature and past.

Marilyn was, and still is, a great pop icon and a sexy, entertainer. Choosing to emulate Marilyn is easy because everybody knows her and she is White America's queen sharing a table with their other queens, Jackie O. and Audrey Hepburn. A lot of these young, Black sisters are ignorant to the fact that they really need to aspire to Lena Horne's level bc she had all the sex appeal of Marilyn, along with class, substance and longevity in her career. And without Ms. Horne, these girls probably wouldn't have a stage on which to copy Marilyn. I suppose it's one of those "things." I also wonder why these artists never want to pay hommage to Angela Davis or dress up as an African warrior queen or, hell- even mimic Joan of Arc. I guess it would be too much of a challenge for them on so many levels.
