The problem is the "ill do anything for a check" mentality thats being passed down to these kids. I don't see a problem with the reality show star niche if its authentic. A certain level of integrity must be upheld. Most of these stars come on these shows as themselves but after fame and money are involved come out as a character, an unflattering and unrealistic character at that.

I think Education and even athletics should still be highly valued and respected. However as Merrick stated there is nothing wrong with taking an opportunity that is offered to you if it doesn't go against your values as a person. The only issue I have with this is it creates a newer generation of youth whos new goal is to be a reality star. Unfortunately with fame theres only a small percentage of people who become relevant. If we are to continue becoming a better society off our future generations where will that leave us if less people make the effort to actually pursue other opportunities which are beneficial to the function and growth of our society. Just a thought....

Good piece. Use what you have, why not? I think we as black folks are a bit modest when shining our lights. We should be the best bright stars.

I don't see anything wrong with capitalizing off of opportunities presented to you, unless they go against your personal moral code and values. The key here is to know who you are and if the position you have to get into to be on a reality TV show doesn't reflect that image, then you have sold out and may never regain your losses from the paychecks you receive. As far as education goes, I don't think these shows go against the persuit of it, Diggy and Russy still had to do their homework and Fantasia got her GED on her show. Not everyone who appears on Reality TV brakes out into other avenues to create wealth for themselves, so I think we have to give some intellectual credit to those who do. We probably think they are being played for having their business on the tube every week, but in Reality, they are most likely the ones playing us!

Education should still be a top priority. With many Celebrities their appeal is enhanced even more once it is discovered that they have unique features that go beyond what meets the eye. Think of your favorite Reality TV star...then imagine you discover that they received a degree from Harvard, or Studied classical music at Julliard, or has a degree in Nuclear Engineering but you began liking them because they were freestyling on the roof of a taxi cab after the club one drunk night.
