Five women will be honored at Essence magazine’s 5th Annual Black Women in Hollywood luncheon this year. Taking place on February 23, Paula Patton (Shining Star Award), Kerry Washington (Vanguard Award), Octavia Spencer (Breakthrough Performance), Pam Grier (Legend Award) and Shonda Rhimes (Visionary Award) will be praised for their impact on the entertainment business and uplifting of Black women over the years through their craftsmanship.
The pre-Oscar event will shed light on these women who, at times, are overlooked in Hollywood but have prevailed nontheless. Luckily for Spencer, she faces one of the most coveted accolades of the Academy Awards: Best Supporting Actress.
Editor-in-chief of Essence, Constance White, shares the same sentiments:
“Black women actors, writers, directors and producers still lack diverse opportunities in Hollywood and, unfortunately, are often overlooked during awards season. The ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon exists to provide a fitting tribute to the brilliant talent and accomplishments of African-American trailblazers like Kerry, Pam, Paula, Octavia and Shonda and celebrate their collective work as an inspiration for generations to come.”
