Is the LGBT Community Too Sensitive?

Posted by on Nov 28, 2011

T.I. might have started a few fires with his statement to VIBE. In the mag’s December cover story, the ATL rapper addressed gay rights and his opinion the “American”-ness of having opinions.

Man, I will say this, the funniest joke I ever heard Tracy say during a stand-up was, ‘C’mon man, I think gay people are too sensitive. If you can take a dick, you can take a joke.’ [Cracks up laughing.] That shit was funny to me. And it’s kind of true.’ While T.I. makes clear that he supports anyone’s sexual preference, he then connects, in his opinion, a current oversensitivity among gay people with a consequential and ironic offense of the First Amendment. “They’re like, ‘If you have an opinion against us, we’re gonna shut you down.’ … That’s not American. If you’re gay you should have the right to be gay in peace, and if you’re against it you should have the right to be against it in peace.’

We told you. Many–not all–lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgendered people take offense to jokes that are not said out of malice. Recently, comedian Tracy Morgan and director Brett Ratner were virtually crucified by the media and gay rights groups for something wasn’t meant for harm or was a bad judgement of expression. Is the community simply hypersensitive to any homosexual reference?

In many ways, I group these situations with the way “nigger” is used. When the term is waved around like a cool breeze, I wonder if the Black community is still upset. Of course, you have those who will take matters into their own hands or “call Al Sharpton” as I like to say, then there are people who have become desensitized by it, even welcoming it as a positive term of endearment. Can that happen for the LGBT community? The term “gay,” I don’t believe, can ever be a positive thing, especially it’s incorrectly used to express someone being “soft” or something being “stupid” is ill-minded and offensive. However, can we joke about the gay lifestyle? Can it be funny to poke fun at anything related to it?
