I love Marilyn Monroe and I'm Black. I see no problem with that, and tbh I don't think she was even so gorgeous naturally, but I liked her spirit and her vulnerability as well as the image of MM that she created (not much the blonde girl, but the image of sexuality and appeal). I always say I like Norma Jeane more than MM because of who she was as a person since I've been reading biographies on her since I was little. Other icons, both Black and White, don't appeal to me the same way - ESPECIALLY not modern ones because people like Beyonce have no background story to tell beyond their "talents". Marilyn was an orphan with sexual abuse in her childhood, and she had a deep yearning to be accepted, which I believe registers with a lot of people on a diff. level (which is why she's so popular still today). Her desire to be loved created the image of MM out of Norma Jeane - MM is loved & I think people who admire her are just living out a desire to be as loved as her image/iconic persona was and is still now. Simple as that. Its not a race thing at all... not imo.

Besides, I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE for there to be a Black woman seen the way MM was/is, but it hasn't happened yet. I'm sure one day it will though. Too many Black stars either shy away from being seen as sexy (or they aren't sexy like being too overweight), or they go overboard and come across as oversexed or tacky. The world needs more images of vulnerable, cute and still sexy Black females. Like the gorgeous girl next door types. Thats an image I would love to see and admire. :) ♥

FeFe, I think you should reevaluate your liking of Ms. Monroe. Not because she wasn't lovable but because how can you love her philosophy and not someone like Dorothy's who went through specific black woman struggles and emerged to be a universal heroine?

The point is, the black icons go (sort of) unsung. That is due to the way the industry works. It needs to change.

Blonde doesn't always mean Marilyn.

Of the photos in the photo gallery, only Rihanna's, Jennifer's and Keri's looks like they were intentionally channeling Marilyn.
Mary J's jumpsuit? More Diana in the 70's
Beyonce? The finger waves and smoky eye all scream 1920's. It's more Josephine Baker.
Nicole? I've never seen Marilyn with a flower in her hair, but I have seen Billie Holiday, Dorothy Dandridge etc. with them.
As for Amber and Nikki and Lil Kim, those are just frightful blonde wigs...

As a Marilyn stan myself, I can say that I idolize her for her journey and philosophy on life and fame. Not to say I dont love Dorothy Dandridge, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, or Eartha Kitt, but I have a special attraction to miss Monroe. And I don't think its far to say that since Im black, I should only idolize black legends
