Yeah...because we should certainly trust studies put out by whites about black hair. Get real. Braids and "hair extensions" only cause damage when not maintained properly, and or attached to the hair improperly. Note "improperly". One must take the hair type, style of extensions, etc. into consideration and weigh if the style will be beneficial or detrimental. Ask your stylist questions. Make sure they are giving you the right hair style for your hair type. Use common sense. Hair extensions and braids are no more damaging than hair dyes, curly perms, etc. when applied properly.

Shalonndra the texture definitely factors in. I have fine hair and I've found that my hair just does not tolerate a weave like it used to. I have had one good weave in my life and my hair grew like wild bush after having the style for 2 months (curly weave with jheri hair) this style required constant moisture and I think this is why my hair grew like it did. But when I moved on to straight weaves, which require constant HEAT, my hair thinned out. My hair wasn't always this thin, though, and I have seen where prolonged wear of braids and weaves have thinned many sisters' hair out. Fortunately I have resilient hair, and I've minimized how often I'll get a weave. Weaves can be a good thing if your texture can tolerate it. I only wear them in summer and winter now (extreme weather months). Some chics wear them year round and it's a wonder they aren't bald. Maybe they are. Another traction alopecia culprit is lace front and half wigs that pull on the perimeter of the hair.

I agree with you Ms. shalonndramarie if you have the braids tight, this will cause hair loss. But you must also give your hair a brake from the weaves too. But ladies just get help once you see this happening so you can stop the loss. Weaves and braids don't cause loss remember this. And black women are not the only ones getting weave in their hair too.

I wear my hair in twists and found that my hair grows better in braids than out because my hair is natural and tends to be very dry. However, it is important to not braid the hair so tight and moisturize daily. I do wash my hair and take breaks from the twists at times as well. The hey is real maintenance which requires time and knowledge of your own hair.

I don't know what type of hair these women have because I have honestly been wearing my hair in Braids since I was Thirteen and I have never lost any hair. I don't get those small white bumps and I wear my hair in all types of styles with my braids. Maybe it's the type of hair or It could be the Glue or perhaps the method of doing the hair anyway's look into those things before you make your final report.
