The newest “It” girl is a princess of the Roc, Bridget Kelly was first spotted singing onstage alongside Mr. Shawn Carter himself. While everyone was scrambling to see who this fresh new face was, BK was searching for the exact sound she’d present to the world.
Sitting tight like her labelmate J. Cole, this New York native thanks her lucky apples to be nurtured as a true artists. Tomorrow (Oct. 19) marks the day her debut EP Every Girl drops and VV decided to catch her for a quick Vixen chat. As she maintains her growing success, she juggles her male interests, mixes up her fashion style and curbs her oily mug during hotel hopping.
But is she a girly girl? Never. -Niki McGloster
VIBE VIXEN: Who were the people in your life to sort of guide you through that time?
BRIDGET KELLY: I have a really close circle of girlfriends that are incredibly supportive and stronger than me at times. Also, my managing team has been with me for the last five years, and they really know me inside and out. I think that really works out in my favor because there are moments where I can act like a jerk and they’ll be able to reel me in and say, ‘Chill out. just sit out for a second and breathe.’ It helps me re-evaluate, so I think it definitely helps that my team keeps me from going over the deep end and losing my mind a little bit.
What is one of your favorite songs on your debut EP Every Girl?
I’m very excited for fans to hear this song I did with Ne-Yo called “In the Morning.” Ne-Yo has become a really good friend of mine and I’m blessed for him to get to know me and for us to come up with really honest, truthful stuff. “In the Morning” is basically about a drunk dial; it’s kind of a woman’s take on “Marvin’s Room.” I can only tell this dude I’m crazy about him or love him when I’m drunk. When my pride goes to sleep and I got the liquid courage, then all of a sudden I’m picking up the phone and dialing. It doesn’t matter what time it is; it doesn’t matter if he’s sleeping next to his girlfriend. I’m going to call him anyway.
When was the last time you had one of those moments?
Oh dear! Probably a couple months ago. I felt kind of bad because it was one of those moments where I think he was with somebody, and I don’t give a damn. It’s a take on a situation that a lot of women aren’t necessarily proud to talk about or be honest about. We’re kind of embarrassed we act like that sometimes, but it’s the truth. There’s a lot of situation for me that hasn’t been amicable, but I’ve definitely gone through some shit and drama. I’m excited for the album because I think it’s going to surprise a lot of people. People are going to relate to the songs that are going to be a little more alternative.
Is there a significant person in your life right now?
There’s a lot of significant people in my life right now. [Laughs]
[Laughs] A significant person that you want to sleep with?
You know I haven’t really paid attention to that. There’s someone I’m interested in, and I don’t know where that’s going. I always feel awkward in romantic situations, but I definitely want to focus on my career.
Respect. Tell me about your fashion sense.
It’s the combination of soft and hard. I really love bright colors. But by getting closer to Jay, it’s all black everything. I’ve toned down the fluorescent [colors] to adapt to the seasons. For me, I love shoes and accessories. Accessories are big for me. A lot of rings, and a lot of necklaces. I don’t like earrings. It’s the only thing I don’t like.
