Reckless, Wild Love Defined In Rihanna’s “We Found Love” Video

“It’s like screaming and no one can hear. You almost feel ashamed that someone could be that important that without them you feel like nothing. No one will ever understand how much it hurts. You feel hopeless like nothing can save you. Then when it’s over and it’s gone, you almost wish that you could have that bad stuff back so that you can have the good.”

Powerful, foreshadowing words from the iconic pop princess Rihanna open her movie-styled “We Found Love” visuals. Released earlier today, the Melina Matsoukas-directed clip was an intensely captivating take on the opiate-infused pull of love and the loss of it. Taking a note from Anthony Mandler’s film-like vids (“Man Down,” “Unfaithful”), Matsoukas creates the first truly mesmerizing narrative we’ve seen from the pop princess with frenzied imagery and full-blown acting chops. Quite sobering and stepping dangerously close to the Barbadian’s reality, the video shot in Ireland is a mirror for any former or present love addict.

Frolicking through fields with wild abandonment, kissing, skating, stealing and abusing drugs, RiRi and British model Dudley O’Shaughnessy (who can easily be a stand-in for Rih’s ex-boyfriend Chris Brown) share intimate moments within the ups and downs of punch drunk love. In rugged street punk wear and 80s-designed denim threads, they puts a microscope on hopeless love spotted, and even balanced by, with the twisted good feelings it provides.

One can conclude that Ri’s creative approach to addressing such an issue is insanely mature and quite introspective.
