Becoming a successful fashion stylist these days is a challenge, Just ask Misa Hylton-Brim. The stylist, who designed Lil’ Kim‘s infamous 1999 MTV Award outfit, showed up to Tionna Smalls‘ Lovey’s boutique for an exclusive ‘Sip n’ Shop’ in Brooklyn to reveal her secrets on “staying in the game.”
After years of creating iconic looks for the likes of Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, and Lil’ Kim…as well as helping Bill Gates pick out design colors for computers, the Japanese/Jamaican mother of three had an important message to share with those who are inspired to be successful fashion stylists — stay determined because it’s very hard in her field of work.
“It’s not easy. It’s hard. I remember when Gucci and Fendi didn’t want to give Mary J. Blige any clothes because they didn’t know who she was. Now they pay her to wear their clothes”, she says.
In addition to getting knowledge, guest at Tionna’s Bed-Stuy shop were treated to unlimited wine and hors d’oeuvres while Misa displayed pieces from her line, Madison Star, and signed autographs. Meeka Claxton (of VH1′s Basketball Wives) and Somaya Reece (Of Vh1′s Love Hip Hop) were just a few of the celebs who made surprise appearances at the Brooklyn boutique to show support.
