You’ve been there before. You just got your hair done, you’re fresh out of the salon, and all of a sudden it dawns on you that scheduled yourself for a routine strenuous workout later in the day. What happens? You don’t want to sweat out your fabulous new ‘do, of course, so 9 times out of 10 you decide to skip your fitness routine in the name of tame tress preservation
At the recent Atlanta Bronner Bros. International Hair Show, however, surgeon general Regina M. Benjamin urged women to think twice about skipping out on exercise. “Oftentimes you get women saying, ‘I can’t exercise today because I don’t want to sweat my hair back or get my hair wet.’ When you’re starting to exercise, you look for reasons not to, and sometimes the hair is one of those reasons.”
But more lies behind the phenomenon than just a vain desire for great hair. According to The Huffington Post, women will put beauty over even the most life-threatening of health issues:
“A survey conducted last year by East Tennessee State University found that women are more likely to buy products that ward off ‘age spots’ than skin cancer. And a recent report shows that women spend way more on beauty products than health care: $540 a month on hair products, make-up, and fake tanners, compared to $360 on their physical well-being.”
Are you shocked by the numbers? We somewhat are. But with the superficial messages being broadcasted to female population these days, it also shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
