I didn’t even consider the fact that celebrities might be having “wardrobe malfunctions” for publicity until I came across some chatter on Twitter. One of my friends wondered whether Nicki’s theatrical fixing of her top was all a part of her performance act.
He also questioned whether the seemingly perfect timing of Kelly Rowland’s nip slip and the release of her album, Here I Am (which hit #1 on the Billboard R&B charts) was coincidental. You can guess what his answer was.
I am more inclined to think that an obsession with low-cut belly-baring tops, which both Nicki and Kelly were wearing, is to blame.
But now I’m considering the thought that nip slips are the new “crotch exposed while getting out of the car” shots. Hear me out.
Do you remember when Khloe Kardashian had a nip slip on Fox & Friends less than two months ago where her nipple appeared from underneath a sheer top? After the incident was picked up by every blog imaginable, Khloe revealed on her own blog that she decided to go bra-less against the advice of her stylist and her nip slip was the embarrassing result. Traffic to her blog was at an all-time high that day.
Lady Gaga’s nip slip was probably the most publicized of the four since it took place on the red carpet at the 2011 CFDA Fashion Awards, naturally. One look at her posing with her chest poked out and both nipples exposed under a sheer Thierry Mugler gown and you have to wonder whether she was aware that her nips had slipped and if that was the point in the first place.
Though the mother of all wardrobe malfunctions, Janet Jackson, was criticized mercilessly for her nipple reveal during the Super Bowl XXXVIII performance, it did get people talking about her. So maybe celebrities are letting their nips slip for just a fragment of that public attention.
