Weight loss is a sensitive issue in the black community. Generally, we embrace curves and think “thicker than a snicker” shapes are to be praised. But when it comes to health, fat around the thighs, hips, breast, butt and belly isn’t exactly ideal.
Jennifer Hudson opens up about her weight loss to Self Magazine, saying she didn’t even realize she was plus-size growing up in her mostly-black community: “I didn’t even know I was considered plus-sized until I came to Hollywood. [...] In the neighborhood I’m from in Chicago, a 16 is normal. But in Hollywood, everyone looks exactly the same, so I stood out.”
Now that’s she’s a size 6, she says: “I’m prouder of my weight loss than my Oscar!”
Now it’s her body and she should be proud that she’s healthier than ever. But winning an Oscar for her first film and as a curvy black woman in Hollywood is quite the accomplishment. We certainly think higher of her Oscar than her journey to fit in with Hollywood’s thin-obsessed culture. And we can only hope that her career will be more about her extraordinary singing and acting talent than the fact that she’s no longer a size 16.
