By definition, there's no such thing as black love. Only love. If it has a color to it, it's not love - just a facade. Love knows no bounds. Stop racism today!

Good for you Julia that you don't see them as the representation of black love but judging from Twitter and these comments, there are plenty of people who do.

@Kellea : that's exactly the problem. If they do break up, do those young girls give up on black marriage altogether? There's danger in that.

I think your commentary is way too serious. Let's take a poll first to see if people think they are "the ultimate representation of black love". Haven't there been rumors of then having an open-relationship? I don't think people are naive enough to think their love is perfect. I personally just like to seem them TOGETHER with their family, with all their flaws, and I would have hated to see them separate because they have a 13 year long marriage and because of the kids. I think you are assuming they are bearing some burden. Lighten up and celebrate Love, black or otherwise.

While I agree with you that Jada Pinkett-Smith is not the "end all to be all" example of Black womanhood, for many young women, she is. I'm not sure how old you are (writer), but I'm 38 and I've seen many successful marriages in my family (Parents married 53 years, many aunts/uncles married for 30+ years and many more). Also, many of us have witnessed Jada's growth from a young woman and actress on A Different World to starring in movies (some roles not so great) to having her own TV show (Hawthorne) where she finally gets to play a mature woman with real world problems and a family, all in the midst of marrying one of Hollywood's most eligible bachelor's, Will Smith, and maintaining a blended family, all in front of the paparazzi.

Having worked in Higher Education for many years, unfortunately, I don't see many young women (or young men) who come from similar households (that of married parents, grandparents, relatives, or neighbors). Some have not seen and don't know what an "intact" marriage looks like, nor what a successful long term relationship period looks like. Think about it, when we live in a society where having babies outside of marriage seems to be the norm, when domestic violence seems to also be something expected, and when rap music/videos and R&B sing about "quickies" and other non-committed relations that are based on gold-digging and sex; how are young girls supposed to view marriage? So when a couple like Jada and Will "breakup" (now we know it was just a rumor), for some, it would be devastating because, unfortunately, the examples of true black love are few and far between.
