No, she wasn’t a megastar. But she was well on her way to being at that level, and that is one of the reasons why her death was/is so tragic. Aaliyah had the talent and determination to be in the position that Beyonce is in right now. Although some people argue that Beyonce would not have had a successful solo career if Aaliyah hadn’t passed away, I disagree. Like Aaliyah, Beyonce is a determined and hard-working entertainer. But to me, Aaliyah had more star quality, a more interesting and charming personality which added to her appeal.

I do believe that BET dropped the ball slightly when it came to their Aaliyah special. Oh she was a megastar and on her way to becoming so much more. She was a hell of a performer…..her voice and dancing were a force to be reckoned with. So what if she only had 7 or 8 hits but she had a bigger body of work than most people know. To me, honestly, if she was here today, i truly believe she would have been bigger than Beyonce. But that’s just my opinion. 313 says R.I.P. Aaliyah….A true Detroit Diamond!

I think no one will ever be satisfied. It marked the 10th anniversary of her death, let’s just be happy it was covered on BET or any other network for that matter. Everyone complains that music networks don’t show videos, and when they show Aaliyah’s videos, they want to see less. I’m not sure when exactly she was a style icon. The one thing I can agree with is her dance. That’s where I believe she was most influential. If you’re a true fan, just be happy they actually showed anything. Not every celeb gets a tribute.

@Devan, you can’t be serious…. No she did not reach Micheal Jackson status but Aaliyah was a rising star. Unfortunately she passed away right at a peak in her career.Just one peak I believe. I am positive had she continued to live she would have had many more. That is the tribute right there. To think of the things should could have accomplished.

There is way then enough material to cover on Aaliyah to do a decent tribute. From “Back and Forth” to “Rock The Boat” Aaliyah stayed relevant and in her own lane. I don’t see anyone doing that right now. A few attempt too but they always fade away in due time. I’m just in awe that you actually found it in your fingers to type the words you just typed. With all due respect you could not have been much of an Aaliyah fan.

I was and still am a huge fan of Aaliyah, but in my opinion Aaliyah’s family is the biggest obstacle. They are simply not willing to talk about Aaliyah or her life outside what has come to be the “official” version, and they don’t want anybody to dig a bit deeper. I am sure BET asked them to participate in the show but they rejected this opportunity.

I agree with everything said here! Necole Bitchie’s video was actually better and had quotes from young artists like you said. It should have been more like a documentary or a performance-driven show and less of a top ten video countdown.

I was a fan of Aaliyah’s but I think that in order for this tribute to have lived up to your standards, she would have needed a larger body of use work. When you really break it down, she had a total of seven or eight hits between three albums. Maybe there was a lot of “filler” because there wasn’t enough relevant work to fill up the time allotted.

Yes, she was popular, but she wasn’t the megastar that people have built her up to be after her unfortunate passing. I’m not trying to diminish her accomplishments or her life, but I think folks get a bit carried away as far as her actual influence.
