I let people touch my hair, it's the 'idk where your hands have been' that freaks me out. Slightly germaphobic when it comes to that

I say "yes go ahead you can touch my hair". Most people of other persuasions (not all are white/ caucasian) that are interested in how the "African American Female" hair feels. Other groups other than "white" are just as curious and also comment negatively on our hair. My hair is soft, very very soft. The hair smells very nice and it holds a style. My hair is very thick especially since I stopped using the "hair straighter". (my stylist told me, black women "straighten" we don't relax. It smells really wonderful and clean and not like the sulphur/lye smell especially when it is not full with chemicals. In addition to all that, we are also healthier. Prolonged use of chemicals will eventually lead to some type of cancer, or something. I am proud of my hair, I love the way it looks and feel. Our brothers are a challenge and sometimes, they make sisters feel bad about their hair. Brothers "stop it", that same sister gave birth to you and the many other brothers around.

Two problems with all of this:

1) "Los Angelista" didn't have the guts/balls/cajones to walk up to that white woman, look her in the eye, and speak quietly but firmly in terms even a q-tip could understand. Something like this: "You are a stranger. I do not allow strangers to touch me or my children. You are not entitled to touch my hair. If you are offended, that's your problem. If you say anything else about me to anyone, I will have my lawyer speak to you about slander. Do you understand me?"

Instead, "LosAngelista" wrote a treatise in her blog about WHY this white woman was wrong instead of confronting the woman on the spot and getting it off her chest. Betcha' the white woman thought no more about it. LosAngelista is still talking about it.

2) Why is this discussion going on about "hair?" Puh-leeze.
Black women have serious problems with hair. And it doesn't get any better. We went through hair in the 60's when the Black Panthers taught us to "say it loud, I'm Black and I'm proud." Problem was while the Panthers were telling us to be Black and proud, they were hugging the long blondies and making "zebra" babies! And 40 years later, we're still discussing and stressing over hair. It's bad enough with the boogie sisters; just as bad with the ghetto queens...everybody is uptight about their hair or somebody elses.

Now hear this: natural hair will make you free-er than anything else you've ever done. Figure out how to handle your natural hair. You ain't stupid. You can do this. And there AIN'T NOTHING WRONG WITH YOUR NATURAL HAIR. Braids are not necessarily the answer. A good cut, a little lite olive oil and water, twist, dry thoroughly, pull out the twists with your fingers, shape and style with your pick and fingers. Slap on some really cute earrings, and go forth and be free. Real simple when you accept you.

One more things: just like that white woman wanted to touch LosAngelista's hair, white men want to touch it too. Nothing is more attractive to a man than a woman who's satisfied and confident by how she looks and who revels in looking how she's supposed to look.

Respect my space... it reminds me of random folks wanting to touch my belly when I was pregnant. LOL

I don't think it was pretentious... like a fellow commentors stated, "mama always said don't let anyone play in your hair, because it will fall out." So now don't touch my hair and repect my space!

If I don't know you I don't want you touching me. It's not about natural or relaxed or whatever set you claim. This doesn't even have to be a divisive issue. I don't know if a person just scratched their crotch or stuck a finger up their noses and now they have their icky hands in my hair? Um, nope. And I have seen how little time women spend in the bathroom washing their hands. Um, nope, don't touch me with your nasty crotch touching, barely washed hands. I don't see the problem.

I don't think it's being "pretentious" to not want people to pet you like an animal. If white people were bold enough to pet black men's heads, you guys wouldn't have it either.

I'm sorry Drew after reading this woman's blog. I think her point is definitely about wanting her personal space to be respected. The things that the woman (white) said after the fact shows the root of her intentions as Alana and other commentators have expressed already. And kudos to Ms. Los Angelista's sons being able to give their mom some comfort and understanding. If I child can grasp it why couldn't this white lady? Calling her pretentious though Drew? That just seems so odd to me and kinda out of content.

oh, drew.
i'd go in, but i'm not sure if this is a REAL inquiry.
the logic surrounding this goes more like: "i don't know you, don't touch me, the end". but you knew that already.
