As women, we are automatically rendered the more emotional sex. We are supposed to cry at Disney movies, believe that hugs and kisses solve everything and just be all-around girly. Though we are supposed to be gentler than our male counterparts, we often have so much on our plates that being weak is just not an option. There is also the fear of being branded with the “angry woman” badge which no one wants to carry around. My suggestion? Say screw it and cry! Scream. Let it out. Say how you’re feeling. Most people might be caught off-guard (especially if they haven’t seen you emote ever), but those who truly matter will accept the validity of your feelings no matter how emotional you are and they will understand you better once you do.
Here are a few tips to help you let it out today:
1. Value your emotions and use them as lessons, not as things to keep on the shelf.
Crying and being sad aren’t horrible things and they definitely are not permanent states of being. Embrace your emotions, both high and low and let yourself truly feel. Once you’re done, move on.
2. Be a sounding board for your loved ones.
You’d be surprised how good it feels to have others confide in you. Always be present for those you hold dear and more often than not, shared experiences can lead you to get over something while helping them.
3. Don’t be afraid of vulnerability: you’re human!
Lil Mo’s “Superwoman” is nice and all, but let’s face it: we can’t all walk around with an S on our chest everyday ok? It’s ok to be vulnerable and unravel from time to time. We’re all human. Don’t let anyone make you feel less than your powerful self just because you have a day in which your emotions get the best of you.
4. Surround yourself with positivity and positive thoughts whenever possible.
This really isn’t as easy as it sounds. Negativity comes in so many shapes and forms and before you know it, you’re walking down a path of ugly. Surround yourself with positive people who are doing big things and if you know anyone who isn’t willing to roll with you in your new enlightened state, rethink their role and shed them if need be.
